Well, here we are in Jakarta, Indonesia! This place is amazing – and you won’t believe this, but we are standing on just ONE of 17,508 islands! Indonesia is an archipelago of thousands of islands, but only about 6,000 of them are inhabited by people. And speaking of people, there are nearly 250 million living on those 6,000 islands.
The largest islands are Java, (the capital, Jakarta, is here), Sumatra, Sulawesi, Irian Jaya, and Kalimantan Indonesia is also part of what is called the “Pacific Ring of Fire” – and it has the largest number of active volcanoes in the world. If you live in Indonesia, you know that earthquakes are serious business! In fact, in 2004, there was a giant magnitude 9.0 earthquake off the west coast of Sumatra that spawned the massive tsunami that roared across the Indian Ocean, killing 225,000 people – 150,000 in Indonesia alone.
